STRATEGIC OUTCOME:
This item supports the City Council’s strategic outcome of Safe and Prosperous by improving the emergency power systems at the Main Street Water Treatment Facility to operate during electrical power outages.
REPORT:
The Main Street Water Treatment Facility is currently limited in its ability to sustain operations during electrical power outages, creating a risk to continuous water treatment processes and overall system reliability for the City. This constraint arises from inadequate emergency power infrastructure to support critical equipment, which can disrupt water service and compromise facility performance when utility power is unavailable. The purpose of this project is to implement targeted upgrades to the emergency power systems to enable continued operations, protect public water supply, and improve long-term resiliency.
The proposed solution consists of installing an SMC-50 75 HP soft starter housed in a NEMA 12 enclosure, together with a wall-mount transfer switch. These components will provide controlled motor starting and reliable switching between normal utility power and emergency power sources, directly remedying the existing operational limitations during outages.
Implementation of this equipment will allow the facility to maintain uninterrupted water treatment and distribution during power interruptions, reduce downtime risk, and strengthen overall system reliability and service continuity for the community.
