Summary Recommendation

Declare the results of the July 21, 2026, City of Yuma Primary Election through adoption of the official canvass by resolution. (City Administration/City Clerk) (Janet L. Pierson)

STRATEGIC OUTCOME:

Canvassing the election at a public meeting aligns with City Council’s Respected and Responsible strategic outcome as it provides formal notification in a public setting and is required by state law and the City Charter.

 

REPORT:

The City of Yuma’s Primary Election was held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, for the purpose of nominating candidates for the offices of:

 

                     Mayor (one seat)

                     City Councilmembers (three seats); and,

                     Presiding Municipal Judge (one seat)  

 

As required by the Yuma City Charter and Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) § 16-642, the City Council shall declare by resolution the results of the Primary Election not less than six days nor more than 20 days following the election.  A.R.S. § 16-646 requires the official canvass to contain certain information which has been included in the resolution.

 

The results of the election are contained in the official canvass to be adopted by this resolution.

The resolution declares the following candidate duly elected to the office of Mayor for the full term of four years, beginning January 1, 2027:

                     Douglas Nicholls

The resolution declares the following candidates are duly elected to the office of City Councilmember for the full term of four years, beginning January 1, 2027:

 

                     Carol Smith

                     Henry Valenzuela

                     Ronald Van Why

 

 

 

The resolution further declares the following candidate duly elected to the office of Presiding Municipal Judge for the full term of four years, beginning January 1, 2027:

 

                     Nohemy Echavarria
