STRATEGIC OUTCOME:
This purchase furthers the City’s Council’s strategic outcomes of Safe and Prosperous and Connected and Engaged by utilizing grant funding to obtain emergency response equipment and technology which enhances the protection of lives, property and the environment along the Colorado River.
REPORT:
The City of Yuma Fire Department (YFD) requests the cooperative purchase of a shallow-water jet boat package for emergency response along the Colorado River. The requested package includes a jet boat with fire suppression capability, transport trailer, side-scan sonar, forward-looking infrared (FLIR), and other capabilities which support YFD’s all-hazards response on the Colorado River.
The jet boat enables YFD to respond to the variable and shallow-water environments encountered along the Colorado River and its waterways. The watercraft will be instrumental in locating and rescuing lost and distressed persons along the river corridor. It will also enable YFD to locate and access areas of high fire risk along the river, with the ability to extinguish fires using the jet boat’s suppression system. The boat will aid in YFD’s Hazardous Materials response should a release of toxic chemicals occur in the lower Colorado River. YFD will use the equipment to enhance all-hazards response on the Colorado River, ensuring adequate emergency medical, search and rescue, fire suppression, and hazardous materials response capabilities are in place to reduce harm to people, property, and the environment along the Colorado River.
YFD personnel selected this specific boat after extensive research and trial efforts. The manufacturer/make/model of the boat is operated by other governmental agencies within Yuma County on the Colorado River. The platform has a demonstrated ability to successfully operate in the unique environment present along the lower Colorado River. Key factors about the boat include durability, maneuverability, and quality of workmanship.
