STRATEGIC OUTCOME:
Supporting the species protected under the program advances the City Council’s strategic goals of creating a Safe and Prosperous community, as well as being Respected and Responsible, by promoting ecological sustainability and ensuring compliance with conservation objectives.
REPORT:
The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area (YCNHA) oversees the daily operations of the Yuma East Wetlands, (YEW). In 2013, the Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program (LCR MSCP) partnered with the Quechan Tribe, the City of Yuma, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and the YCNHA to support the long-term management of the conservation area. Through this partnership, the LCR MSCP contributes to the maintenance of existing habitat and implements adaptive management actions that benefit the species protected under the program.
The U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation has provided funding to support critical infrastructure upgrades at the Yuma East Wetlands. In April 2024, the Bureau of Reclamation awarded funds to enhance the long-term sustainability of the wetlands for future generations. Planned improvements include the design and replacement of the water distribution system, transitioning from diesel-powered pumps to energy-efficient electric pumps, extending concrete canals, and installing electrical infrastructure to support future technological advancements within the conservation area.
A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was issued to solicit responses from interested firms for the design of the project. An evaluation committee, composed of City staff, reviewed and scored the submitted proposals using the established RFQ scoring matrix.
The City received responses from two qualified firms, both of which demonstrated relevant experience with similar projects within the state.
